EDWARDIAN LIFE (CARTOONS)

The Edwardian period (1901-1914) heralded great changes in political and social life away from the constraints of Victorian society.  It was also a period of great differences between the wealthy and the poor.  It was brought to a sudden end with the arrival of world war in the summer of 1914.

It was during this period that the postcard craze developed. Postcards were published, sent and collected by the thousand. Many were photographic images but there were also hand drawn and painted images.  Some of these images were cartoons commenting on and satirising daily life.

Two centres of cartoon postcard production were the university cities of Oxford and Cambridge.

The cartoonists and people depicted were university students and townspeople alike, living in what is often perceived as a romantic golden age.

Many were to die in the slaughter and mud of Flanders.
